Justin (Judd) Coleman



Justin K. Coleman was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and moved to San Diego, California as a young adult. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree from California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo. While at Cal Poly he also completed a Minor in Fine Arts which included a year of study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy.


In 2005, he returned to his native Philadelphia where he received his Master’s in Architecture from University of Pennsylvania and taught design at Philadelphia University (now Thomas Jefferson University).


Among many diverse roles, his 27-year tenure in the construction industry includes: five years as a Project Manager for a renowned California architect; 12 years as a Project Designer on large, highly complex buildings throughout the Eastern United States; and four years as Design Director at another Philadelphia based firm.


He has overseen the execution of several award-winning projects ranging in scope from hospitals and laboratory buildings to single room renovations and art installations. At Justin K. Coleman / Architects, he continues to devote his full attention and commitment to all of the studio’s projects, no matter how large or intimate in scale.




I started out doing scenery and lighting in some Philadelphia and San Diego area stage theaters. After a few stints working as a cabinetmaker, then as a welder in a metal artist's studio, I decided to pursue my career as an architect.

A quarter of a century later, I believe my early exposure to performing and visual arts and to 'making things' continues to inform my work in architecture. That is to say, I try to balance good ideas with good execution; and abstract design concepts with a broader understanding of the physical world of materials and fabrication methods.   -jkc
